When Nicholas Roy entered the music scene, as a piano player/ singer-song writer, he felt somewhat unusual in the indie rock venues he frequently played. Regularly slotted in amongst jangling guitar bands, his material often surprised audiences and was very well received. In 2006, whilst living in Western Australia (temporarily), Nicholas produced and recorded his debut EP titled “Cardboard Heart”, for sale at gigs.
Following on from backpacking and busking in Europe, and further time spent in Perth completing uni studies (Bachelor of Music), Nicholas returned to his hometown of Melbourne. Through mutual musician friends, Nicholas met and began working together with writer/producer Jaime Jimenez and further developed his song writing skills.
With a home recording set up (and influenced by the likes of Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, Ben Folds Five, Jeff Buckley and Beck...and believe it or not Elton John!), Nicholas began creating a sound and style that is quite unique, yet somehow accessible.
2007-2009 saw the independent release of a number of singles; “Devilish Smile”, “Taxi” (from the “Taxi” EP) & “Dangerous Games”, all of which received some moderate airplay on Triple J (“Dangerous Games” being a weekend favourite of DJ Sarah Howells) and across community stations in Melbourne . In particular, the “Taxi” EP received some critical acclaim in the Melbourne street press & online zines.
During this period Nicholas created some self-funded videos for “Taxi” (which was actually home-made with a small hand held camera) and “Dangerous Games”, that has subsequently been played on Rage, along with regular video-play on “Go” (Channel 9 – digital) and viewed on Youtube and Myspace.
Which brings us to the present story…with the above steady stream of well received music releases, some radio and video airplay, combined with regular touring across Melbourne and East Coast venues, it was the next single release that would strike a chord where Nicholas’ music was to be discovered on the Triple J Unearthed site by the masses of discerning music listeners!
“It’s All My Fault”, the first single release from the upcoming album - a simple song with unique and meaningful/genuine lyrics that people can relate to, brilliant melody, Nicholas’ trademark melancholic – yet soulful vocal style, was delivered to Triple J December 2009, which has lead to the current and further emerging success of this artist.
The song received instant airplay the week of delivery and was aired on 2009 – Best New Releases of the week with Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill. Since then “It’s All My Fault” has been on high rotation airplay with a steady upward climb ever since, reaching #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Indie Music Chart and regularly voted #1 song by listeners on the Super Request program, building Nicholas’ artist profile within the Indie music scene.
August 2010 saw the official release of Nic’s debut album “In A Shoebox Under The Bed”, through Little Tribe, distributed by MGM. Nicholas will be touring extensively in 2010.
